I took the shuttle to see Kay. She was in with the others listening to the leader offer some information about our world. This is a regular event. I got her attention and she smiled at me. I put out my hand and said come with me. She didn't seem to completely comprehend what I wanted but when I continued to hold out my hand she took it and got up with some effort. After a while she seemed to get stronger. In her room we lay on the bed after I got her a truffle. We held each other while she rested her head on my breast. No TV or anything but us two. About a half hour later I disengaged ourselves and I took her into the hall then back into the room and bed then another truffle. She did the selecting and I had to put back several truffles she had in her hand. I took her back to the goings on in the activity room but she only wanted to stay a little while. Back we went to her room and I stayed with her until the caregiver came in to give her a shower. I didn't see how I could help but at times she does not want a shower. She never took showers at home. Just baths. I those days her hair was different and she would not want to get it wet. Now it is short and that does not make any difference. Strange. About the first thing to go when she began to exhibit signs of dementia was her desire to care for her hair and put on makeup. Something that was first in her life then was first to go. Today she had on a blue sweater and black pants that looked pretty good. I combed her hair as I usually do.
She likes my coat |
As the caregiver was preparing her for her shower and I was telling her I was going home and I would be back tomorrow she asked me "are you sure" I am never sure if she is joking or not. I have not had the chance to talk to Iris about their plan to move her to another floor.
