Example of Supermarket Subterfuge

Some castigate MacDonalds for selling unhealthy food but I have not found them advertising one thing and selling another.  MacDonalds is selling health food when compared to some things you get in a supermarket.  Take Angel food cake for example. Any angel food cake I ever ate was made with egg whites.  Look for egg whites in any supermarket Angel food cake and the only place you find egg whites is down less than folic acid but above salt.  The ingredients of a product is supposed to list them in order of the amount with the largest amount first then in descending order.  It is my guess that when they get down to the amount  of vitamins, minerals and salt pepper and so on may not follow this rule very carefully.  In the Angel food cake  I checked in a major food supermarket chain the label had  egg whites listed below folic acid which is usually prescribed in mcg or micro-gram amounts. As you know a mcg is 1/1,000,000 of a gram.  To measure egg whites less than 400 mcg is in my opinion quite hard so they just dumped it in with the other small amounts of ingredients.  But the thing that amazes me is that they had the audacity to include egg whites as an ingredient at all.

Real Angel food cake in the normal home recipe -  will have the major ingredient of a dozen egg whites first, then perhaps a cup of flower next.  But for a receipt to claim an ingredient of  egg whites of less than  400 mcg is very dishonest at the least. For the FDA to allow this continue is a travesty.
I became aware of this trick some years ago when I was looking for the ingredients of a lemon meringue pie and noticed that lemon was not even listed in the list of ingredients.  After I questioned the supermarket on this they started listing lemon in the label but not actual lemon but the grated rhine.

Is this important?  The first rule of health is to eat  healthy food.  To eat white flour is not healthy.  You must do more than just read the label you must also understand them. The high glycemic index of white fllour with the high glycemic index of the sugar in the cake will send a diabetic blood sugar through the roof.  Not a healthy condition.
