The History Channel says that there were 415,000 Americans killed in WW2. That is close to double the casualties I have heard from other sources. But in any case for 4 years that the US was at war about 415 a day were being killed or missing. To this day 70,000 went missing and were never heard from again. That is more than were killed in either Viet Nam or the Korean war. And that is just the missing.
When you think of the cost of WW2 the question I have is did the leaders of this country and especially Franklin D Roosevelt do all they could to keep us out of war? The premier British Historian David Irving recounts how Roosevelt in his dealings with Churchill's efforts to get the US to bail Britain out of WW2 was more interested in the perception that he wanted war. He wanted war just not being blamed for the responsibility of getting us into it.
But in 1941 all this was a mystery to me as it had been drilled into my mind that politicians were honorable and all wanted the best for our country. That the desire for fame didn't influence their decisions.
I had always remembered that my dad alway seemed to be disappointed that he missed out on the war. So as the war progressed to it's inevitable end I decided I had to volunteer if I wanted to be able to say I fought in the war, for democracy. After I volunteered my brother, Loyal and brother-in-law Lester Tibbetts either were drafted or volunteered and went in.
