Do pills help dementia or are they a scam?

The last two days Kay has got over wondering what has happened to her mind. She has settled down and seems normal for her condition.  I talked briefly to a woman at the Fred Meyer coffee shop today about her grandfather and his dementia.  I suppose she wanted to compare their conditions.  From the brief time we talked it seems he is in a condition where he can not take care of his personal cleanliness.  Kay doesn't seem to have that problem except that I have to remind her to take her baths. I asked the friend what medication he was taking and she said he was taking 7 pills.  SEVEN PILLS?  Unbelievable! I have had two doctors who off the record doubted  pills   help dementia and is pretty useless.  No one claims to cure dementia or Alzheimer's.  The only thing they "think" might happen is it slows the dementia down.  How do they know it is even slowing the dementia down?  There doesn't seem to be any way to compare that in my opinion.  You give the pills and compare it to the previous  time but this time it can  be different and not comparable..Sometime doctors give pills because they give the loved ones comfort and not because the doctor thinks it will help.  I think I did the right thing because Kay is just losing her memory and doesn't have any of the other bad things associated with what may be side effects of drugs. .
