It's really looking bad for the Boeing workers who work on the 787.  It is not just necessarily just to fix the problem of the burning batteries but by doing  it the right way.   Other users have solved the problem but Boeing also has to fix it by not increasing the weight.  Other users do it by encasing the battery in an iron case.  Every pound on this airplane is considered.  And to fix the battery problem by substantially increasing the weight is something  Boeing just can not do indiscriminately. I see today in the Seattle Times that each one of the batteries cost $16,000.00. Not much perhaps in the grand scheme of the cost of the airplane but on the other hand nothing to sneeze at.   That's profit your talking
here.   Yep, looks like the 787 production line is headed for trouble.  Boeing said it would be keeping the production line going but how much space is there to store these airplanes?  Looks like Boeing's idea to make parts all over the world and ship them to Everett s for assembly is not working out. Save your pennies Boeing workers for it looks like up you might need them to supplement your unemployment income.

Surprise: Boeing is leaving Seattle

So Boeing is leaving. Get used to it. Boeing would make their airplanes in China if they thought they could get away with it. Making money is the name of the game. Boeing has been in Seattle since year one but has begun serious outsourcing of it's workforce the last few years. Especially with their second line of 787's going to Charleston SC. When and if the line gets up and running and they can compare costs exactly for what it costs to make them in Seattle or Charleston then there will be no doubt about remaining in Seattle where Boeing began. The rest or Boeing will go too. Of course it is going to cost Boeing hugely to set up the second line but the chance to make money is worth the risk. Local Union members whine that Charleston doesn't have the reservoir of skilled workers that Seattle has but that is nonsense. Boeing either fired their skilled work force, or they are on unemployment so that is not much of a factor any more.
