Staying committed

By the time I was 5 years old I had had enough of divorce. So when I asked Kay to marry me 73 years ago at 19 years of age I told her I would never leave her. I did not promise that I would be such a model husband she  would want to stay with me. But somehow I stayed within the bounds and we never had any problems that caused us to consider anything else but staying married.  Now 73 years later I have the chance to really keep that commitment. She is in the facility for people with dementia and I get rewarded by the little things that give her a little pleasure. In return for the big pleasures she gave me in these 73 years. The relief and pleasure in her eyes when I see her understand that I will be back tomorrow. The smile when she waves goodbye as I leave. These are just two.

Around here I think everyone now knows that I go see her every day.  In a conversation today one lady told me she had been married 5 times.  She thought I was a model husband. You could tell by her tone she was not at all missing their company.  Even the one who gave her all her children.

There is a lot of unhappiness in people who did not manage to stay married. As long as I am physically able I will continue to go see Kay.
