Into the unknown

I was watching "Piece of Cake" for the umpteenth time this evening. I was bored  watching the usual TV trash, and none of my unwatched movies moved me to watch them.  I  drag this old British aviation series about the early air war of WW2 out occasionally.  The producers do such a magnificent job of building up the tension of a war that started out called "The Phony War" for a squadron of pilots composed mainly of graduates of the top schools of England like Oxford, Cambridge and so on.  Flying Spitfires, itching to try their mettle in battle.  But when it actually comes they learn fast that  War is venal, noisy, frightening and dirty .  In short order they loose their romanticism. Their impeccable dress and first class quarters in a French chateau compared to the dirt and grime of the foot soldier was no help in keeping them from dying in the horrible bloody death of a private in the Army.  In one part of the movie when the realization came to them that the war was no longer phony but deadly and that they probably were going to die they decided to go to the local restaurant and get drunk. They were still in France although within  few days, unknown to them at that time, the Germans were about to overrun France causing a route of the British forces in France.  This scene reminded me of my time in France when I and a group of other soldiers went to a local French restaurant inVillerupt France.  We were stationed in a Replacement Depot in the the Maginot line just back of the lines when the Germans were being pushed back from their assault in the Battle of the Bulge.  We proceeded to sing the old World War 1 songs like Mademoiselle from Armiteres, It's a long way to Tipperary  and others with plenty of French wine.  It was so much like the scene in the movie . The big difference however was that the squadron in the movie had a long war ahead of them where as the war I was in was winding down although there was still plenty of time to die.
