I'm making Thunderbird my email client.

Gmail is getting so bad with add's cluttering up the page it leaves me with about a 15 inch screen monitor.  I bought a new 24" led backlit LED superduper monitor but by the time it's all said and done I have about a 15in monitor because Google has so many add's on it. Frequently also I click on a link in an email and instead of the link showing what I get is an add for viagra or some such.  These software companies think they can do your thinking for you they continually bring up stuff you don't want.  They are not that smart. So I decided to give Mozilla Thunderbird a chance (again).  So far what I get is a page of an email form.  Not a lot of advertisements. It also has some features gmail does not have but on the other hand gmail has some Thunderbird doesn't.  Addons may fix this condition need to  One thing I do like is that "Reply" and "send" are always there and you don't have to go looking for it.
