Update on Dementia

It has been several days since I posted anything about what is going on with Kay's dementia. Although she has advanced dementia I still have to try to keep her from looking at what I am writing because she can wonder if it applies to her.  For instance she just asked me what it meant about "Kay knows she has problems".  I had to say something so told her she as memory problems.  So even though she has problems she still has some reasoning of some kind for certain subjects.

One major incident happened at Fred Meyer deli where we go for soup to get out of the apartment.  We got the hot soup which was in an independent free standing kiosk.  I turned to go over to the nearby coffee shop to eat the soup and when I got to the cash register I  turned to check on Kay and she was not following me.  I put the stuff on a table and went back not more than 30 or 40 feel away.  I hurriedly looked in the area but could not find her.  I went to a supervisor and asked her to help.  She could not find  her.  It was obvious she had gone somewhere.  I got out to the car and as quickly as I could and drove around the building which is about a block square.  I found Kay around the corner just standing on the sidewalk looking at the building ahead. Ahead of her was the plant department which kept the sidewalk from  continuing on leading on  into the building.  I figured that she had run out of sidewalk and didn't know what to do about it so just stood there. She said she was looking for me.  So of course I took her back to the deli and we had our soup.

This morning at 5 AM I heard a strange noise. It kept repeating itself. It sounded sort of like an old time choo choo engine but indistinct. So I went to the bathroom.  Coming out of the bathroom it was quite loud.  I went on to the living room and there it was very loud I went to the patio door and peeked out the blinds There was Kay standing and knocking on the door. After I got her inside I asked why she was outside.  She showed me the newspaper and told me she had gotten the paper.  Of course what she had done was go out the front door and get the paper then went on around to the patio door then could not remember how she got where she was.  These instances have a bad effect on you and you take a while to get over them.  To be finished  in a few minutes
